Meat and greet: Intel and DCU to host first beef IoT hackathon

4 Mar 2015

Ireland’s first beef hackathon will aim to bring the internet of things (IoT) to the Irish beef industry under a partnership with ABP Food Group, Intel and Dublin City University (DCU).

The event, taking place Friday, 20-22 March on DCU’s Innovation Campus, is calling on entries from graduates of all disciplines with particular emphasis on agriculture, food technology, innovation and design, engineering and software development.

As one of Ireland’s traditional industries, agriculture, and beef in particular, is gradually embracing technological change and IoT is one that is being hotly tipped to not just increase efficiency among beef production, but this in turn will increase annual yields at a time when beef demands worldwide is increasing at an exponential rate.

Participants in the beef hackathon have the opportunity to win a first place prize of €10,000, second place prize of €5,000, or third place prize of €2,500, all sponsored by ABP Food Group.

The additional Intel Galileo Award Prize of €5,000 goes to the best maker solution using an Intel Galileo board in the prototype with the backing of Intel Quark Solutions Group.

Paul Finnerty, CEO, ABP Food Group, said of the endeavour, “The emergence of IoT has the potential to impact positively on how we work and operate as a business and an industry. Through this beef hackathon we want to explore the connection between IoT and key themes within our industry, including nutrition, grass-fed beef, tenderness and consistency, as well as processes and farm efficiency.”

Likewise, Intel’s VP of IoT, Philip Moynagh said, “Hackathons are fast emerging as an optimal way to bring together makers, entrepreneurs, designers, engineers, creators, innovators and developers from across the country to join together for intense sessions dedicated to developing ideas and solving problems’’.
